Protect Your Family from “Kidnapping Sub-Contractors”

Ruben Garcia - Charged with Kidnapping
We’ve all heard stories of sub-contractors who are less than honest, but kidnapping! It’s true. A local family in Cornelius, NC had hired a crew to paint the exterior of their home. A few months later one of the workers on that crew (an illegal immigrant) was arrested for planning to kidnap the family’s two children, ages 7 and 8, and hold them for a six-figure ransom. How do you know if the sub-contractor you hire to work on your house is trustworthy?

One of the intangible benefits that come with hiring a reputable residential General Contractor is access to the relationships he has built over the years with his sub-contractors. Professional contractors will run background checks on new subs and stay with only the best in the business. A good General Contractor will keep up-to-date files on all certificates of insurance, trade licenses and tax information. Less reputable General Contractors will hire subs that use illegal immigrants paid under the table resulting in cheaper labor. A low-ball bid on a custom home design & build, kitchen remodel, bathroom remodel, home addition or similar home renovation/remodeling project can be an indication of this practice.
